Aroha Silhouettes

Tania Hennessy, aka Aroha Silhouettes, introduced us to her debut collection of jewelry - called Phantasmal, it's made up of twelve design illusions that become 3-D silhouettes when worn. Each necklace is laser cut from reclaimed 12" vinyl records, making each piece one-of-a-kind due to the unique nature of the vinyl records. I'm a big fan of the stack of books!

My favorite discovery were these brooches by Feral Childe. Bold and over-the-top, yes, but that's what's so nice about them!

Stephanie Simek emailed me about her gorgeous jewelry last week - I could have sworn I had posted about it before, but a search through the blog reveals that it somehow slipped through the cracks! Stephanie is a Portland based artist who combines found objects into her jewelry. I love LOVE the Gold-lined Quail Egg Necklace, which is made from Japanese Quail eggs that have been lined on the interior with gold leaf, and coated in plastic on the exterior for strength. New to her collection is the Illuminated Sea Cookie Pin which back-lights a sea cookie with an LED.

Anne Morgan Digital Safe-Keep

Anne Morgan sent over images a while back of her amazing jewelry line "Digital Safe-Keeps" - jewelry with integrated USB drives. She likens them to modern day lockets that allow the user to keep their dearest memories, photographs, songs and videos on them at all times. A very personal story motivated the jewelry line:
"The only thing I want to leave to my children is the memory of my first-born child. Lucia was born on September 6th, 2003, and died 8 days later. All the photographs we possess, and the songs written for her by her Dad, are on the USB memory stick, that is contained inside the ring. Our lives have moved on with another daughter born 15 months on. It is difficult to bring Lucia’s name into everyday life. This ring allows her life to be marked and celebrated. She will not be forgotten from one generation to the next."

Leslie Shershow

Leslie Shershow is a Boston-based jewelry designer. She spent a summer in Alaska and created a jewelry series in response to her time spent there, noting that "In a place coined by man as "the last frontier," Alaska faces the threat of human exploitation. I illustrate this exploitation with issues such as hunting, tourism, mining, drilling, climbing, controlling nature, developing, etc. I am not, however, deeply rooted in my views on preserving nature, in light of the dire economic situation that Alaskans face. Rather than illustrating this conquering with disgust, I choose to display a more vague and humorous approach to these issues. For many reasons I am contradictory to these subjects, for I was only a summer visitor."

Sarah Van Gameren

I've seen Sarah Van Gameren's work quite a bit over the past few months without knowing that it was hers. I finally came across her Family Tree necklace on Pan-Dan and had to check her website out, which is when I made the connection between Sarah and all these other great projects I've been admiring around the web. Her Family Tree project seeks to represent the lineage of a young client named Runa, and draws its inspiration from 'name-jewel' necklaces.

Some of the other projects I've been admiring: Burn Burn Burn, where Sarah has created a type of paint that can be burned to create a permanent mark on a surface, and the Big Dipper - wax chandeliers that will create an ephemeral, changing light fixture.

Claesson Koivisto Rune's Eve Bracelets

My dear Betty sent me a link to Dezeen's post on Claesson Koivisto Rune's extruded aluminum Eve bracelets, designed for Collection Pascale. The bracelets are made by rotating a raw aluminum extrusion and simultaneously slicing it at varying angles to create a series of unique bracelets. This uniqueness is a nice contradiction with the nature of the mass-production that typically occurs with this process.

Ideas and Sponsors...

So! New month, new ideas column...Sorry for the shameful delay in leaving up the valentine's chocolates - it's sort of like leaving your Christmas decorations up until June, huh? Anyway, springtime = shoe time, so if you know of any shoes that would fit our Ideas column, send them on over to us!

We are also very happy to welcome Nervous System and Artstream as sponsors this month. I've posted about Nervous System's gorgeous jewelry before and am a huge fan.

As for Artstream, they are a fantastic gallery up in Rochester, New Hampshire (we were lucky enough to have an exhibit there in Nov-Dec of last year). Artstream has a great show called Stories and Tales going on right now, exhibiting the work of Abby Glassenberg, Darryl Berger, Alena Hennessy, and Tara Hogan.

These necklaces by Eskimeit are made from Ubamegashi coal, a luxury (!) coal in Japan used to fuel grills particularly for cooking eel in high end restaurants. Pomellato

People! I had the hardest time picking pieces from Pomellato's collection to highlight. They have so many great pieces - I love the over sized stones and the unusual cuts. Their work tends towards two directions - ornate and simple. I much prefer the simpler pieces. A friend of mine has one of the Nudo rings (bottom right) and I have been obsessed with it for years. I haven't been into the new york city store yet and there aren't prices on the website, so the jewelry could be scarily expensive (my bet), but it sure is pretty to look at! Greetje van Helmond

Greetje van Helmond is a student at the Royal College of Art, where, for the RCA summer show, she exhibited a line of jewelry called Unsustainable. The pieces in Unsustainable are made from sugar crystals that are "grown" in a solution right onto the cord.

Greetje's interest is in taking banal, everyday products and turning them into beautiful, seemingly valuable objects.

From the artist:
In present day life we can say that we consume a lot. Durable materials are often used for the production of goods that are typically replaced or thrown away quickly. Contrary to this I use everyday, basic materials to create products that appear valuable and sustainable. Because of the materials I use, the products won’t last long, but long enough to stay "new".

Biojewellery

This is just beyond wierd...I don't fully understand how this works, but essentially Biojewellery is a company that works with select couples to "grow" rings from their donated bone cells (apprently removed wisdom teeth work best). Being that the website describes it better than I ever could:
"Their cells will be prepared and seeded onto a bioactive scaffold. This pioneering material encourages the cells to divide and grow rapidly in a laboratory environment, so that the scaffold disappears and is replaced by living bone tissue."
The couple ends up with a ring that is made from the other partner's tissue. A little too creepy for me, but it's a very interesting project, and the sample ring is very appealing. The image to the right is the bioactive scaffold.

These simple necklaces by Ronni Kappos match a tranquil palette with soothing shapes of vintage German glass beads from the 1920's and 30's.

Linea Nervenkitt

Linea Nervenkitt has some gorgeous jewelry lines. I love the layering of chain and the clustering of stones in some of the pieces. Jane's story is great as well - she was a PhD student at Harvard studying neuroscience, and used her graduate stipend to fund her interest in jewelry. Not that I would know, but "Nervenkitt" is an old German term for a particular type of brain cell. Indeed.

Karen Walker

While Karen Walker's jewelry is all very nice, the images of the jewelry really steal the show. If you know who the photographer is, let me know!

UPDATE: The photographer is Derek Henderson and the stylist is Katie Lockhart. Thanks, Allebelle!

Anne Maa

Love these jewelry pieces from Anne Maa. A lot of people are doing the wire wrapped rings these days, but I really like these because they enclose the stones nicely. Plus, I'm a sucker for a rough cut stone.

Beautiful jewelry from Sigrid Widmoser. I love the rough quality of both the metal and the stones that she uses. The organic rings are pretty nice, too.

A friend in college always wore ring watches (hi alisa!). I like this ring watch from MOCA. Not too bad at $22, either.
