A bank is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it begins to rain.

Wonsuk Cho

MoCo Loco posted about Wonsuk Cho's gorgeous X-Ray Lights - I love them! His X-Ray Lights take the iconic fixtures and make them the lamp shades. Beautiful.

Equally lovely are Wonsuk's Book Hangers, which add a little pleasure to every day storage - conveniently arranging the books you are reading in an orderly way - even allowing you to bookmark your place when you put the book away for the day.

Shikisai t-shirts

The husband and wife team of Shikisai make the most amazing t-shirts ever. I had such a hard time picking just a few to show you...Shikisai's shirts are clever and interactive and always have a surprising 3D detail. I love the shirt depicting a game of Go, complete with black and white pins. They also have a line of shirts for toddlers, with corresponding adult tees (sort of like our Pair tees!).

Christian Vivanco

Christian Vivanco makes beautifully detailed, playful furniture. I appreciate his consideration of all of the different sides of a piece of furniture - the back is often as beautiful as the front.

Laurence Brabant

I'd never seen Laurence Brabant's work until today - she has designed some amazing work, particularly her glassware. I love her bud vases that have openings for multiple flowers, and her recycled bottle utensils and glasses. Definitely a designer to watch!

Hanna Hedman

How amazing is Hanna Hedman's jewelry? It's ethereal. I wonder what it's made out of?

Sarah Van Gameren

I've seen Sarah Van Gameren's work quite a bit over the past few months without knowing that it was hers. I finally came across her Family Tree necklace on Pan-Dan and had to check her website out, which is when I made the connection between Sarah and all these other great projects I've been admiring around the web. Her Family Tree project seeks to represent the lineage of a young client named Runa, and draws its inspiration from 'name-jewel' necklaces.

Some of the other projects I've been admiring: Burn Burn Burn, where Sarah has created a type of paint that can be burned to create a permanent mark on a surface, and the Big Dipper - wax chandeliers that will create an ephemeral, changing light fixture.

PS. Thanks to Desire to Inspire and MSNBC's Clicked for the blog mentions - and hi to all of you who are coming from there!

Nervous System

If you're looking for a last minute gift to give your lovely lady - Nervous System makes some amazing jewelry. Inspired by complex patterns generated by computation and nature, their work is a mix between organic and technical that is all beautiful. Nervous System is a collaboration between Jessica Eve Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg, who met in 2004 at MIT where Jessica was studying Architecture and Biology and Jesse was studying Mathematics and Computer Science. I love how they have merged their diverse backgrounds to create these beautiful products.

D-Bros 2008 Calendars

Oh Joy! and I must have had the same dream last night. I had D-Bros on the mind this morning and so checked their website and came across their great new line of 2008 calendars. Just opened up Google Reader - and the first post I came upon was Joy's on D-Bros! Yum, I love them. Their work is so cheeky and fresh, and I love the broad range of products that they make (though I'm only showing their calendars here, check out their website or my previous posts for more of their work).

The calendars are available in a bunch of different stores, but stateside they are available at de de ce.

Afroditi Krassa

There's not a lot of text (read: none!) on Afroditi Krassa's website, which leaves me to my own devices and wanting more information. Her products are sassy and beautiful. I would love to hang one of her "Bright Lights" (top) in my living room...

Alissia MT

Jean over at Notcot. posted about Alissia Melka-Teichroew’s gorgeous Inside Out Glasses. When empty, the glasses all have the same shape. When filled with liquid, each glass reveals a traditional, recognizable form. A nice play on negative space. Check out more of Alissia's great body of work on her website (Sean actually proposed to me with Alissia's diamond ring!)

Tunto

Tunto/Mikko Kärkkäinen is a very impressive Finnish designer. It was hard for me to choose just a few products to showcase, but I did my best! What I like most about Tunto's products are the urban graphics and bright colors that permeate their collection of work.

The Hoover lamp is a gorgeous fixture, and I love how the base seems to be sitting on the floor with you. The packaging is awesome, too, with the lamp shade just peeking out over the side.

The M3 is a seat/storage unit, which is great for people like us who have tiny apartments and need all the storage we can get.

Below is the Vuokko table which I like for its simplicity and also for the splash of color on the underside. It's available in many pretty colors!

Robert Stadler

I know I posted about Robert Stadler's +336+ SMS mirror a few days back, but browsing through his website reveals such a great body of work, so I want to post a few more items...

The Pentaphone is a lovely change from the standard telephone booth. It is gorgeous to look at, and besides that, it is adjustable to your height.

Foreveryoung would be a nice replacement for my 5 lb weights. These dumb-bells are made from Carrara marble and are available in 3 and 5 kgs.

Frank Tjepkema - Heartbreak pendant

Came across this "Heartbreak" pendant by Frank Tjepkema a while back on Pan-Dan. The heart is made out of porcelain, and the hammer is made out of titanium. The appeal of the pendant is that if it cracks over time (as it is meant to), it will continue to hold together because of a rubber coating inside the heart, turning the pendant into a broken heart.

Frank is also the creator of the Signature Vase, which we posted about a few months ago. Love his work!

Edouard Larmaraud

I like this ring. I might have had to kill Sean if I was given this as my engagement ring, but I think it's very clever. Designed by Edouard Larmaraud and called the Trompe L'Oeil Ring, it comes with a tiny diamond and a crystal magnifying glass.

I also like this lamp by Edouard. When it's off, it folds up and sits neatly on your desk, and when you open and reposition it, the lamp lights up. Nice!

More work from a new favorite, Thwart Design. I love the humor in their work. Above is the Mold Vase, below is the Iron Curtain.

Emiko Oki

Found another designer to file under 'favorites'...I think these products are so clever! Both take typical household objects and subvert them by applying new meaning to old objects. I love the modified pint glasses, especially the wine glass within the pint glass! The trophy table set is a nice project as well...a clever ensemble of products. Emiko Oki is a young Japanese designer based in England.

D-BROS

Sean and I wandered into Future Perfect this weekend and discovered the awesome Japanese collective D-BROS. I love how playful their work is.

Also very cool are these plastic bag vases. It's hard to tell from the photos, but these vases are just heavy duty plastic bags that you fill with water, insert flower, and voila!: instant vase!
